“COST 351” Workshop
on Water Movements in Road Pavements and Embankments
to be held in Athens, Greece on June 20, 2007

during the International Conference on Advanced Characterisation of Pavement and Soil Engineering Materials

 WATMOVE

Water movements in road pavements and embankments may be a critical threat against their efficient, reliable and economical performance. Water that comes from rain and/or from the ground may weaken the road structure and materials so that the pavement cracks or ruts faster than it should, and it sometimes carries contaminants from the construction into the surrounding ground and into streams and lakes. Working under the umbrella of European Union, the COST (Co-operation in the field of Science and Technology) 351 group after three years of evaluation of the best practice in combination with research outputs, has come to some ‘best advice’ conclusions. This information are going to be presented in detail during the final dissemination Workshop that will be hosted in Athens on the 20th of June 2007, as a parallel event of the Athens-07 International Conference on the Advanced Characterisation on Pavement and Soil Engineering Materials. Among others, presentations and discussion will include:

  • Effect of water movement in pavement and material performance
  • Durability of pavements and embankments against water movement
  • Maximisation of road material performance,
  • Management of water flows in and out of the road construction,
  • Control of movement of contaminants by water in the road pavement and immediate surroundings.

Updated information regarding the organisational and time-schedule details for the Workshop will also be available in the Athens-07 web page, in conjunction with the final program of the Conference.
